Legalize Illinois

SPRINGFIELD (May 31, 2019) – Legalize Illinois issued the following statement today in response to the Illinois House of Representatives voting to pass House Bill (HB) 1438:

“Legalize Illinois applauds the Illinois House of Representatives for today’s historic vote to pass the nation’s most equitable bill legalizing adult-use recreational cannabis. We eagerly await Governor Pritzker’s signature on this momentous legislation, ending a period of harmful cannabis policing and ushering in a safer, more just future for our state and communities.

“Legalize Illinois wants to thank the bill’s sponsors – specifically Sen. Heather Steans, Sen. Toi Hutchinson, Rep. Jehan Gordon-Booth, Rep. Kelly Cassidy and the other supporters of HB 1438 – for their tireless efforts. Today’s vote creates a path to expungement for thousands and establishes opportunities for Illinoisans across the state, particularly in under-served and over-policed areas.

“The passage of this bill marks a significant step in correcting the injustices of the so-called ‘War on Drugs,’ in Illinois and we are hopeful that reinvestment of cannabis revenue into our communities will also help repair damages of the past.

“House Bill 1438 is a model for other states in its commitment to equity and criminal justice reform. However, significant work across the country remains to be done. We are proud that Illinois has joined the group of states legalizing adult-use recreational cannabis — a group that we hope continues to grow with social justice at its guiding principle.”
